Ok here's an event to chase away the couch potato blues, and get you skating into December. I have not checked with the event organizers to see what they think about skaters taking part, this year. Please post what you find out if you get to it before I do!

Last night we watched Sketches of Frank Gehry (see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446784/), a nice little documentary about the architect who designed the Guggenheim in Bilbao, among many other twisted cool buildings. Some of the most fun was watching them take scissors to their models of buildings and mix bits about.

Roadskater.net RSN2.com Update

OK if I remember I will use this page for news about changes and experiments with the site. I've been quiet again lately because I've been putting in a lot of time in the background, updating the software for security and looking for ways to address some things I didn't like. Here are some things to try or note:

Chad Hedrick back after a rest

Chad Hedrick is back on the ice after several months off, and this article shows he has some new attitudes, at least for now. He seems to be planning to do less in hopes of doing better (since he didn't win all gold) and may be actually following the example of others a bit. He's in with the team this year, including their coaching (as his former coach is now in Germany). This article is an account of what for Hedrick was a warm-up race, and it has some good quotes of note. --Blake

Misty's 2006 A2A journal entry

My 2006 A2A story: (a bit long-winded, but fun to remember anyhow.)

***Before reading this story, please note that I skated the A2A on quads, not inlines. This might help explain some of my equipment 'issues'.

You'll be a LIMBO star... how low can you go?

Did anyone see the article about the little Indian girl (Gwalior, India) who skated under 40 cars with only 8 or so inches of clearance? I kept trying to find a place where the video was clearer, but it always shows up looking neon green like a negative image or something. Either way, that girl would be a total LIMBO CHAMPION!!! My son and I always do the limbo when we go skating... I used to win it every time... *sigh* not now.

Hypokalemia, Hyponatremia and Endurance events (Running, Inline Skating, Cycling)

As many of you are already aware at the end of this years A2A I paid a visit to the ER. The symptoms and diagnosis were something that I was not previously familiar with and I wanted to share my memories in the hope that you might recognise them in yourself or someone else in the future.
It took us longer than expected to skate from Athens to Atlanta for a number of reasons. These are not meant as excuses or complaints just background.

Roadskater.net Top Cities Last 4 Months

Here's the most recent list of cities that made up over 0.1% of hits over the last four months. This is incomplete and unscientific, with anomalies. Atlanta probably got a kick from my presence there often in recent weeks, and Herndon may sometimes show up when Greensboro might be the real source (Roadrunner may be a reason for this).

Floyd Landis update - the best defense is a good offense

Floyd is taking the fight online and has apparently posted a lot of information on his home page.  (www.floydlandis.com)...  I've linked to an article with a summary and it sounds like he's just putting up a lot of data to back up his claim that the French lab was either incompetent, purposely spiked the samples, or both...

My 1st A2A: 1999 (the Year it POURED)

I feel like this really only half-counts as an A2A journal, because I only did the 38 miles! At the time I did not deem myself worthy of a write-up, believing I didn't really count compared with people like Eddy, Barrie, Cindy S., Patricia F., and other really proficient skaters. So this is a collection of memories, and comments I posted to the 1999 Team in Training's mailing list.

2005 A2A Journals

In 2005, several iterations of the A2A took place. The club version was the Outlaw, and three Roadskater.net skaters did the course on the originally planned day, calling that the Sidekick. Another Roadskater.net member provided support. The effort was to make sure that there was a 24th Anniversary Edition, and the two groups each tried to ensure that by skating the course for 2005. Other successful attempts followed the Outlaw and the Sidekick.

A2A 2003 report

(posted on my website a long time ago, reposted here for Blake's A2A History project.)

Wow - I've been so swamped the last few days, that I'm just now to the point where I can write something of substance... Let's see now, where to begin.

A2A 2002 report

(posted this on my website a long time ago, reposting here for Blake's A2A history project)

Well, 2002 was the year I was supposed to make a quantum leap in my performance. I trained better, upgraded to 5-wheel racing skates, attended an Eddy clinic, and had a little experience under my belt. I figured I was a shoe-in for a sub-7 hour time. In 2001, I put in a 9-hour time on rec skates, without any drafting at all... So I readily admit I was cocky going into A2A...

A2A 2001 report

(Posted this on my website a long time ago... Reposting here for Blake's A2A history project.)

On Sunday, October 7th, I skated 86 miles from Athens, GA to Atlanta, GA. This was the culmination of much training and the accomplishment of a major goal I set for myself over a year ago. It's also pretty cool that, having just turned 30, I'm probably in the best shape of my life.

sommemi's picture

So, how long have you been skating?

Ok, just figured since I'm kinda new to this whole "online community of skaters" that I would introduce myself.

HI. I'm Misty.

Oh, I guess I should say a little more. I'll try to keep it to a minimum. I tend to talk a lot. WARNING: This skater will not shut up.

RSN2: Why no signature files?

Hi to all, and welcome to new members. I have been meaning to post about this issue for many weeks but have not done so.

I am looking to disable all signature files for the site and until then I will be manually deleting them. The reason for this is that unlike an email list where things vanish into the ether, this is a public website where we really don't need hundreds of copies of the same phrases, links, etc.

Silver Hill to the End of A2A 2006

We made it to Silver Hill and many of us were together again for moments, but at mile 69, the crest of the first climb on Silver Hill, we knew everything would blow apart. Yong and some others were off the front again by this point, I believe, and we got a great note from him later explaining he had a flight to catch to his new home in San Francisco, I believe it is. He was stronger all day anyway!

After the Pack Crash to Silver Hill Road

Back on the road just the two of us for awhile, we knew we had been part of a sweet couple of hours of roadskating life. We picked up Michael somehow, somewhere before the downhill to a small two-lane doubletree-lined bridge. Michael seemed pleased to stick with us and we were companions for many miles on this day, with much fun and a warm feeling of new friendship by the end. What a nice guy!

Sunday Morning Prep, the Start, the Crash

My biggest freak early on Sunday morning was deciding sleeves or no sleeves, so that's a good low freak level. Oatmeal was good. I drank more Electromix and as much water as I could (we had bought 24 half litres from Walgreens and it seemed good stuff). We also had the Anna filter pitcher (for the water filters I sell) and I think we used some of that for our packs the night before.

Saturday A2A Preparations in Athens

Saturday we slept until we woke unalarmed, then slowly stoked the fires until we had some Pilon espresso in a slightly rich mixture even for my tastes (or at least I did). We started looking at wheels and bearings and decided to go with what we had for bearings, with me opting for new wheels due to the totally dry forecast and for whatever that might help me with regarding changes in my boots.

The Friday Night Pre-A2A Skate in Atlanta

I can't say that I remember much about Friday on the way to Atlanta from Greensboro, but I remember a major traffic jam and detour at the SC/GA border. I decided to take the detour, whereas a lot of folk stayed on the Interstate. I think they won, but I can never be sure of course.

In 2006, the weather was light rain before the event, wet roads in the first thirty miles or so, with sunshine most of the day. The temperature in Atlanta was 60 at start time, rising to 74 by noon, reaching 80 by 2 pm and 82 degrees by 4 pm. Winds were light in the morning and from the south, rising to around 10 mph from the west at midday, dropping then peaking again to 10-12 in midafternoon from the north. 25th Athens-to-Atlanta 2006

Ok roadskater people - here goes my very first blog entry. If you think A2A is long, just wait...

We're talking about the 25 anniversary of Athens-to-Atlanta. As far as I know, this is the world's longest running point-to-point outdoor roadskate anywhere in the world. For me it's also served as an annual pilgrimage to a place of better mental and physical well-being in almost every year since 1992. If you haven't heard of Athens-to-Atlanta (A2A), then either you're not an outdoor skater or you've been living under a rock. Visit http://www.a2a.net at your earliest convenience. A2A is not your typical athletic event. I'd say it's rather unique among even skating events though honestly I'm probably not as well qualified as many other skaters to make that judgement. But before I bias your reading of what follows by telling you about me, let me relate this year's A2A event as I experienced it...

Athens to Atlanta: Finding a Paceline that's "Just my Speed"

Most oft uttered statement to me by other skaters this year on T2T, T2T training rides, and A2A: "I was skating alone (and therefore bonked) because I couldn't find a paceline/other skater that was just my speed."

A2A Athens to Atlanta Roadskate 2006 Photos

Hey everyone. My photos are up. I may put some comments here later. As usual there are few photos from the last half where it is more hilly more consistently and where it is not, it is more urban and congested. Of course if I want great photographs I'll probably have to not skate, and if i want to skate great, I'll probably have to not take my camera and batteries along to distract me! In any case, here are the photos and I hope you find some you love. Maybe soon we'll have photos integrated into the site, but I didn't want to hold up the photos for that. Here they are:

The Phenomenal Athens-to-Atlanta Roadskate 2006

Once again I sorta had my head in the sand about training for A2A, and once again I got through it somehow, securing another 87 sense-defying Georgia hilly miles. What a blast! Ah I'm still on such a high 2 days later, and still having recurring delirium each time I doze off, that I'm out there stumbling endlessly along the A2A course, looking for the finish line.

OK we are all safe I think, all of us Roadskater.net folk, and others we know. Nobody has posted here probably because we're all catching up on rest, reading other people's posts, or editing photos we took. Roadskater.net picked up some great publicity I think due to the fact that Erica listed us as her team. Whether or not this ever happens again, it was a joy to see a Tour to Tanglewood veteran take the big prize, or at least to hear of it. There are many stories to tell, and though I had my worst time ever it was one of the best times doing it. I can't recall an A2A I didn't love.
