Kudos to Greensboro NC for Center City Park Wireless WiFi Access

Hello to all after a few days away when even RSN2.com took a day or two off! I'm sitting in Greensboro's Center City Park using the Wifi connection, and I must say this is nice. At about 8pm, the light is fading and the temperature is cooling a bit from a nice warm day. I decided against skating for several reasons, one being the orange level air quality warning, a very late schedule of sleeping and waking, and some work that needed to be done.

Helmet Lights for Inline Skating (Rollerblading) Cycling (Bicycling, Biking)

Below is a series of emails about various helmet lights, in reverse order of posting date:

Huston: Bob's inquiry & my recent ventures in solo nightskating re-stimulated my search for lighting. Here's what I found:

Silver Comet Skate/Ride on Memorial Day 2007

From: Huston Sent: Monday, May 21, 2007 3:12:02 PM Dave/Barry, thanks for the update. I was going to check out the road section on the Covenant Christian Century on Sat., but a big dog rudely jumped in front of me before I got there. I had no choice but to hit him, which propelled me over the handlebars & onto the pavement. So I spent the rest of the day at Floyd General being treated for a broken collarbone & rib. So no skating, cycling or dancing for me. So, I'm entertaining offers for my registration. Huston

Tour de Lions, Grays Chapel, NC 2007 Report

What another satisfying, smooth and sufficiently challenging Tour de Lions event! We arrived for registration at 7.30am, grabbed some bananas and other carbs, plus coffee, all provided by the event and its volunteers. The weather was sunny but brisk at about 50 deg F.

Basic Recreational (Rec) and Fitness Inline Skate Brands (Rollerblades)

Melanie recently asked on InlineNC yahoogroup. I think:
  • K2 inline skates (rollerblades) are a great option,
  • probably bigger wheels (90 or 100) for smoother roll over rough stuff, and/or
  • a longer frame for point to point roadskating, or
  • for tricks of course, shorter frame length makes arcs and spins easier.
  • Salomon makes great inline skates and has seemed to support them well, but there were some frames a few years back with problems and I think the company has been sold so it may be wait and see time.
  • Rollerblade is making some interesting inline skates but I note they still liked heavy kits when last I looked. The Problade boot looks pretty good if you get the kit with the box frame that's Mogema-ish rather than the earlier, thinner model we've seen bashed.

Those are my quick thoughts on that. i'll post this to rsn2 also.

TimV Sweeps at Up2Speed 25 mile Greensboro Depot Ride

Just a quick note of thanks to timv for coming out on his bike to sweep the GVC ride so I could skate safely. Without any other skaters, I likely would not have lasted long.

In fact, it turned out later that we found my rear right wheel was being torqued enough by my brake frame that the skate frame had rubbed much of the side of the wheel off. The logo text was mostly gone from the side of the wheel. I will have to keep an eye on that.

Skate of the Union 2007

Skate of the Union half marathon was my second outdoor race of the season. The race was held at a police driving training course and had one of the best surfaces I have ever skated on. It was such a smooth blacktop that my green Matters felt just a little bit too soft for it.

Heart Rate, Activity Type and Calories Burned

Hey can any of you answer a question for me? Is it true that I would burn more calories in one hour of running than, say, one hour of cycling, if my heart rate is the same for both? If so, can you explain why?

Bonking on purpose?

I read an article in Triathlete magazine (and then spent several days looking for it again ;-) )  I couldn't find the exact article but here is one which references the same research on active.com:

Inline Skaters (Rollerbladers) Roll Through Art Museum in ABC Series

This Thursday night "The Traveler" rolls out with rollerblading (inline skating) pranks involving three kids skating through an art museum. This reminds me of Bertolucci's The Dreamers, which contains an attempt at breaking the record for running from one end of the Louvre to the other, itself a reference to Godard's Bande à part (as ever, wikipedia.com has much on both films). I understand also that Looney Tunes: Back in Action has a scene where Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are chased through the Louvre. Anyway, check your local listings for the ABC channel near you to see some skaytn on teevee. Previews I've read indicate the quality of the show to be less than amazing, but how often do we get to see any skating of any inline kind on the tele? So if I get a chance, I'll watch. Thought you'd like to know...

Simcha Sweets: the Best Triple Chocolate Decadence Cake

This is something I have to rave about: Chocolate Decadence Cake, made by Simcha Sweets and Treats in Greensboro. They don't have a store, but they do have a phone: 336-632-0629. I don't actually like regular chocolate cake (thinking it's either a waste of perfectly good chocolate, or that chocolate cake is just plain cake ingredients colored brown) - but this one from Simcha Sweets and Treats is chocolate...with a sprinkle of flour in there somewhere. It is by far the richest, most condensed cake I have ever eaten. It's like licking the bowl - before you empty the cake batter out :-)

Magic Crystals for Smelly Skates

Since I have got my custom boots, I have been skating sockless and enjoying it very much. The fit of custom boots is so great that I found that wearing socks was interfering with it. However, the sockless fashion brings one unpleasant culprit - odor. Unfortunately, with a lot of hours of skating, the smell coming out from the inside of my boots could easily kill a small animal... I needed a solution. Luckily, Eddy Matzger has published this tip of the week on Inline Planet in the beggining of the year: http://www.inlineplanet.com/2007a-tips/01/2/teatime.html

Nutrition

During my (running) marathon training I have become quite interested in nutrition. I am talking about general nutrition more than what to eat during extended periods of exercise – that is getting enough calories into me to sustain the long runs and fuel the adequate muscle recoveries (before doing it all over again!) without eating high fat or inadvertently putting on a whole bunch of weight.

New Skaters at Country Park, Old Books at Ed McKay

We spent another weekend with Eddy at his Roadshow Inline Speed Workshop, this time in Atlanta. After the ATL workshop and an overnight drive back to GSO, all while having had a cold from last Friday on, today was the first time I felt mostly out of the fog. It was toasty hot here today at 89 degrees, and 84 still at 6:30 or so by the time I started skating.
