Athens to Atlanta A2A Roadskate 2008 to 2009 Detour Elevation Profile, Distance, Route Changes

roadskater's picture
Here are two graphics I made to compare the 2008 route and the 2009 route for the Athens to Atlanta (A2A) Roadskate, for anyone who is curious. I imagine a very few people will be intensely curious. The first graphic shows the changes in elevation profile and distance for 2008 and the 2009 detour. It takes a little over 5 seconds to switch from 2008 to 2009 and then it should repeat to infinity and beyond. The second graphic is a closeup snapshot of a data overlay for my 2008 and 2009 traverses of the course. The 2008 route is the one with the red markers (87 red balloons maybe) as I had the 305 on autolap that year, a lap per mile). This year I forgot to do that, but there are still directional arrows at each mile on the detour. You can see that the original course is cleaner and more direct as it is able to use the currently way closed Cruse Road. There are places where we made really good time on Old Norcross and Sweetwater, but these were mitigated by stoplight waits somewhat. Also, I was cramping and slowing (OK, stopping at points) some during the neighborhood section, and at Pleasant Hill Rd, I pondered existence and the Myth of Sisyphus along with traffic, as my roadpals, Eebee and Jason, waited. (Jason having just recently at that moment made a decision to come back to us and stick with us the rest of the day, from which he did not waver despite repeated releases from any perceived obligation.) Soon thereafter, I made a good friend of a rock at the traffic light on Pleasant Hill, out in front of Lowe's Hardware. I wish I had a photo of that rock, for it was formed well to fit me in that moment, quads in pain. At some point we'll begin to refer back to "the year that..." so here's some data to go along with our muddled self-justifyingly optimized memories! Skateylove mi skateys...Roadskater

Cool stuff - looks like they flattened that one hill

Nice pic of switching back and forth! You can easily see where the extra distance was added in - it almost looks like they took that one steep hill around 57mi and flattened it into a few smaller hills.  I'm sure the extra distance made up for the "flattening" though.
