Atlanta Cyclists and Mayors to Ride to Capitol in Support of Bike Paths Tuesday March 3, 2009

Wow. Mayors propping multiuse pathways! After Bryan's post about Critical Mass, I looked over in the right sidebar and saw this about the ride next Tuesday, March 3, 2009

The easy-paced ride on Tuesday morning will include police escorts from Decatur and Roswell, with officials from both cities in the lead. Mayors Bill Floyd of Decatur and Jere Wood of Roswell have coordinated the event for four years. Their goal: rally support for a regional network of bike paths and trails. The ride is sponsored by the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association and the group Georgia Bikes!

Now and then I really am happy about something. This is great. Atlanta really is trying to make cycling across town (and all the way to Anniston, AL if they connect to the Silver Comet) viable.

Departure times are 10:45 a.m. from Decatur and 9:45 a.m. from Roswell. The ride from Decatur is 5 miles and starts at the north parking lot of the East Lake MARTA station. The Roswell route is 21 miles and begins at Roswell City Hall.

It's all FREE and novices and families are encouraged. Get thee to http://www.georgiaridestothecapitol.org to register and print that and bring it with you so you can enjoy the best part...free snacks.

No word on skaters, but were I there, I'd go find out at least in Decatur for a 5-mile easy roll. They get to the capitol by 11:40 or so, meaning the Roswell ride will need to make a faster pace, though still reasonable on skates, whereas the Decatur bunch can make 5 mph and be there on time.
