The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Book Commentary

Apparently I'm still not learning the lesson. With a strong sense of irony, I feel like I don't have the time to write a coherent commentary about Jean-Dominique Bauby's blink-dictated account of his life with post-stroke 'Locked-in Syndrome', in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

What's more, I can't bring myself to call this a 'book review' either, as the term for me connotates critique, and how can anyone review or judge the bottom-line nuts and bolts of ugly human life? It is what it is, whether I like it or not.

Inline Skating in Guilford County, NC: Parks & Recreation Website Includes Skaters (as Athletes!) Rollerblading

The Guilford County Parks and Recreation webpage has icons you can check if you're searching for a local park with a particular feature, e.g., paved trails, disc golf, horse-riding trails, etc. They have some very specific little icons, and the skater looks a little out of control, but I'm happy that my chosen sport is included here. Get this: they've even lumped skaters in under the 'Athletic' category, and not in the 'playground' section. Yay.

Transformers Movie Spoofs Speed Skating Citroen C4 Ad

At my son's urging, we finally watched the Transformers movie last night. At about 1 hour 50 we were treated to Transformer 'Bumblebee' speed skating down a highway. This is the clip they showed on the Oscars, prompting me to yell "Hey! That robot just did a crossover!".

February Skramblings: K2s Revisited, Training Thoughts

Skate Ramblings, that is. Not trying to coin a cute phrase - but perhaps diluting search results with my pointless drivel. Hey, it's what a blog is for! Some February thoughts on skating, journal-style...

Book Review: Chris Carmichael's Food for Fitness

The Lance Armstrong Performance Program, by Chris Carmichael and Lance Armstrong, brought me successful results during last Summer's training. So I decided to check out a nutrition book, also written by great American cyclist and cycling coach Chris Carmichael, called Food for Fitness, which came out in 2004.

Fears of a Clown, it's a Knockout, and Jeux Sans Frontieres

Big surprise! A study by the University of Sheffield relating to children's hospital-ward decorating has determined that most kids don't like clowns, calling them 'scary', according to Yahoo! article, Don't Send in the Clowns.

Skate, Bike or Walk to Work in Downtown Atlanta for a $15 Gift Card

It would be worth getting a job in downtown Atlanta over the next month just to make a statement here!

The Downtown Transportation Management Association, part of Central Atlanta Progress, is offering commuters a $15 gift card if they find a more environmentally-friendly way to get themselves to work and back more than 23 times between Jan 15th and Feb 15th, 2008, according to an article in yesterday's Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Exercising Outdoors Alone: Should I Skate with a Gun? The Meredith Emerson Case

Great - now I have another excuse aside from exhaustion or the weather as to why I shouldn't skate in the evenings after work...the danger in skating, walking, running alone on a park trail.

Atlanta Braves Baseball Pitcher Tom Glavine can't... SKATE... today?!

When it comes to Dion Sanders, Michael Jordan, and many other athletes I've never heard of - some people have more than their fair share of professional-sportness! Reading some Atlanta Journal-Constitution headlines this morning I did a double-take, thinking my sleep-deprivation had hit an all-time low: "Glavine Ill, can't Skate Today". I sometimes misread words like 'steak', and 'shake' as 'skate', but Tom Glavine and 'Skate' in the same sentence?

Performance Findings After a 2 Month Break from Inline Skating

Some interesting self-assessments after taking a break from any kind of exercise for 2 months (except climbing the 40 or so steps to my apartment about 4-6 times a day!), and after throwing all caution to the wind regarding healthy eating :-0

A Moment of Silence for Mr. Gatorade

Gatorade inventor, Robert Cade died today, aged 80. Here's a yahoo news report. In the obit, Cade is quoted as saying that when he first drank (an early version of?) Gatorade, he threw up. It also says that the company that took over the licensing rights, Stokely - Van Camp, hated the name Gatorade, but found out that the name was a hit with the general public, so they left it.

All I can say is thank you for helping me stay out of the emergency room on many a 90 degree F day, Mr. Cade!

Laziness & Healing Time: Pulled Hamstring Muscle

Somehow back in mid-September I pulled part of my hamstring. It wasn't a big strain, and I have absolutely no idea how I did it. I am tee-total so it's not like I woke up one day with mysterious injuries from the night before. The pulled muscle was bothersome enough to where doing endless parking-lot crossovers led to discomfort and instability. It must've been my monster underpush :-)...

Athens to Atlanta Roadskate 2007 - Black Holes and Revelations!

I'm referring to the Muse song "Starlight". Several phrases of the song seem to fit my A2A experience this year, with the Black Holes being the painful gaps in the Gatorback pavement along Dekalb Avenue around mile 82. And the revelations? Well...

I don't care who you are - A2A will kick your butt! It will raise your hopes and expectations, and then punch you in the gut. It's everybody's race, it's nobody's race. We all want to win it, but most of us won't. Fantastic! I love it!
