The last Training Ride before the tour is always fun. Come on out for a free skate ride with the Tour to Tanglewood riders. Get to know the core group of MS Society volunteers and riders. Free, with great rest stop support! Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and rollout is usually 8:30 a.m, but be there a bit early in case they're eager to start.

Not sure yet if I'm going to be able to take part this year, but it's not because I'm not yearning to. Most years I try to find some safer, park-like hills to see approximately how fast I can charge up and down 6.2 miles of hills before I sign up, just because I want to have a hope of beating my best time. However, it's almost impossible to duplicate the effort because it's held on a closed-course road, devoid of toddlers and dogs. Stone Mountain Park, GA, offers the best, similar conditions to estimate how long it'll take you to complete the US10K course.

Come out for our social skate and ride at Bur-Mil to meet others skating and riding the Tour to Tanglewood for MS. Show up early if you can to get your jersey, and join us for dinner afterward. Search for "Bur-Mil Park, Greensboro NC" in maps.google.com for directions.

End: 2007.09.14 9:00 pm
Here's another event, and this one's important if you can manage a reply, so I can plan for dinner. Things may change but as it stands we'll shoot for being at Lucky 32 by 6:45. The main thing to reply about is "will you attend the team dinner this year, wherever or whenever it happens to be?" The team dinner, like the Prologue Skride, is optional and open, but may not be too interesting to those not skating or riding or visiting the tour. You may add invitees to either RSVP. Let me know ASAP! I'll have the jerseys at dinner as well.

Adrenaline will surge on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 7:30 a.m. as the gun signals the start of the largest inline marathon and ARC (American Roller Cup) Series event in the U.S.A.! Following the same scenic course Grandma's marathoners have run along for the past 30 years, nearly 4,000 inline skaters will test their endurance in the 12th Annual NORTHSHORE INLINE MARATHON.

Start: 2007.09.15 8:00 am

Come skate or ride with well over a thousand cyclists and roadskaters as we raise money for the National MS Society and its local chapter. There's much more to say but not for now as I'm going to go skate!

I just wanted to share an event here in Randolph county. The sk/ride starts out in Asheboro and goes through various parts of Randolph county. The roads are usually pretty decent but there are a lot of hills, great if your into that. I have spoken to the director and it is ok for skaters to come. I think this would be a great way to increase the awareness of skating in our area.If you are interested post a note here and I can help answer questions.  Registration costs $20 in advance $25 day of...inexpensive, and you get a T-shirt while they last.

Danny's InlineNC write-up, after skating this Bloomington, IN, cycling event back in 2005, got me dreaming about taking part in 2006. Well I completely missed it. It was the weekend right after A2A. However, I'd like to try to make it in 2007, because the course sounds and looks outrageously hilly, and hilly = fun, right?! If you go to their homepage and click on "2005 photo contest winners" you will see what I mean about the hills. By the way, what a great idea to help promote an event: a photo competition.

A2A is over, the leg-swelling is gone, the let-down has set in and I'm itching for another excuse to spend a long day skating. I am happy to find that the Claxton, GA, Chamber of Commerce is putting on another 'Cruisin' in the Country' (cycling) event this year. Blake and I, plus Keno, Mark Day and some other APRR skaters took part in this great event back in 2003 (on skates).

The soon to be formerly known as ncbikeped group will get a new name this weekend. You can help make it include other rollers specifically (skaters, skateboarders, wheelchairists of the commuting and athletic training sort) by attending and voting for the name with "Roll" in it. It's down to 2 names and this is the vote that decides it. Please be there!

I did this ride several years ago and haven't been able to get back that far south, but it was a good one, and it is skate friendly and run by folk who don't expect everyone to be super speedy. I remember a rest stop at a firehouse that was nothing short of amazing. The details escape me and I don't have time to look them up just now, but suffice it to say many consider this the first non-race roadskate of the season in Georgia.

I received an email today from Stacey White, part of GT speed team, who is sponsoring the Marathon through the gardens in GA next month. They are involved in a fundraiser to help out Joshua Zalunardo, who was diagnosed with Brain Stem Glioma, a life threatening for of cancer. I know a lot of people on this site support many worthwhile causes and thought I would pass this on. Our money and time goes to help someone and we get to have fun doing it.

I have pasted the contents of her email with all the pertinant info...

Having skated with Blake and many others last summer at so many outdoor events, I am always looking forward to somewhere new and different to skate. I ran across this marathon a few months ago and have gotten all the details. I thought I would share with everyone. It seems like the marathon is set up for the more adventurous of us who like to race, myself not included, than those that skate outdoors for the pleasure, relaxation, scenery, exercise, etc...

This is one of my favorite events each year, and here's my report from 2007. If we do this event, we will of course, be skating it, as the organizers and cyclists have always given us such a warm welcome in the past.

I wanted to see if there's any interest in sharing rides to Hartwell, GA, on the border with South Carolina, for the Hartwell Challenge of the Centuries. To quote them, it is "Open to cyclists and accomplished skaters!" I'm still not sure I can go, but if someone else is interested and we can cut the costs, it'd be fun. It's bike or skate, and it's well supported, with routes of 35, 62, and 100 each day. Skate over the Lake Hartwell dam on Sunday on all routes. It's cool.

We're considering this one. Likely the 34. Call any time before midnight or after 7a for confirmation if it matters whether we're there. Inexpensive and likely to be a relaxed group. Starts at Country Park!

Note: it's not easy to skwalk from the road to the shelter, so skaters and those who love their cleats obsessively may want to walk over in street shoes to register before donning the gear.

Registration begins at 8a.

If you're curious about this event, just promise yourself you'll go out and do it! Beautiful, hilly terrain, rural roads, an entire town volunteering support for the ride, prizes, food, and a great cause...

Here's my report from last year's event:

Last year Kale himself made it very clear to us that we should come back in 2008 - and bring a bunch more skaters with us!

Ken's Ride has some great roads and beautiful views, plus some mild suburb traffic, and two or three technical challenges for skaters of the downhill sort. If you have a brake or nice wheel burning budget, it's a nice, hilly day out.

Cycles de Oro is a constant supporter of inline skaters being part of charity bike rides and much more, and Dale was a co-incorporator of the new NC Active Transportation Alliance, which has welcomed skaters along with walkers, runners, cyclists and others engaged in human-powered transportation. This ride starts in the north part of Greensboro, with one technical part near the start downhill to a T at Latham Park. After that, it's out of the city to the north and back in by familiar roads, then through Sunset Hills back to the shop. Always a nice time with super people.

Paceline Bicycles in Winston-Salem puts on a nice ride and they're definitely friendly folk. It's a bit citified at the start but quickly nice country roads. Coming back you may need your braking skills or good timing, but it's all good and not far to the shop from there.

T2T training rides welcome experienced roadskaters to join in, but if it's your first one, please talk with the MS Society staff, a Bike Response Team member (look for their jerseys!), or a Roadskater.net skater if you can before rolling out. Bikes are welcome too of course!

Spinz Bike Shop is a relatively new sponsor but they did a lot last year at various charities, not just the Tour to Tanglewood. I went to their skride last year and met Andy there. We had a good time on some nice roads. Of course any ride starting in a town named High Point ends with some kind of uphill run! We had a great time and they were mighty friendly to us at the shop.

Hi everyone!

I am teaching the next SkateStrong workshop on Saturday, July 19th, 2008. Normally, I'd point everyone to the website for details, but the power supply on my webserver (which was just replaced 4 months ago) has died again! So, rather than wait for the replacement to be shipped to me, I thought I should get the word out now so that people can plan accordingly.

Not much available on this festival yet, but some of the Boston skaters have come down to skate Tour to Tanglewood with us, so maybe we can find a way up to see them. I wonder about the train, if it might be competitive at these gas prices? It'll be much later if I can decide to do it. I wish I could have been there last week in fact for a geek con up there. Great skaters and a great town equal tons of fun. I don't know much about Skate Boston. Anyone here been? The website is http://www.skate-boston.net but I think they're not ready for us as of this writing.

Paceline Bicycles in Greensboro hosted a great ride last year with police support for their Battleground Ave location at rollout and even when we returned from a long ride. Great job Greensboro City Police! The Paceline team has been friendly to our team of skaters at the tour and around Country Park, and this skride is another way to enjoy the hills north of the city and share the road with lots of friendly cyclists.

Paul's had a shaky ride or two, but the last one I went to was great fun on great roads. Near the shop it's a bit busy, as with most bike shops (that's why they put 'em there!), but once out to the open roads I recall some sweet rolls and nice views. I'm glad Paul's paid attention to feedback and improved their route some years back. Thanks!
