Skaters and cyclists and others who participate in active transportation (walkers, runners, skateboarders, more) please come out to the open board meeting of the North Carolina Active Transportation Alliance on January 11 in Raleigh. As we transition into a new federal administration, it's an important time to make your voice heard in support of projects that favor more and safer alternatives to the automobile...especially human-powered alternatives.
Now is the time to get this Skate on your calendar.

By the time February '09 rolls around, I'll be looking for some warmer weather.
Some other roadskaters have participated in this event over the last few years so let's hear from them and their experiences.
Hope to see you there!

I just wanted to get it in the schedule block by adding an event too. Thanks for posting, Birgit.
Looks like lots of fun. Wish I could be there. Tampa's nice for skating especially in cool seasons.

This year's Hartwell Challenge of the Centuries flyer mentions skaters. Under the 'Rider Comments' section is the quote: "I highly recommend it for skaters". The flyer also states "Open to cyclists and accomplished skaters".

I thought I had already set this up as an event this year. Must not have!!
It's this coming weekend: June 20th 2009. Distance options: 25K, 60K, 110K, & 125K.
Part of a series of excellent free skrides (bike rides where skilled inline skaters are welcome) put on by the NC Central Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society. The rides are well-supported, marked, and free to all, including those who may not end up participating in the annual Tour to Tanglewood
for MS (but you will love the training rides so much you'll be more likely to do the tour after trying most training rides). These rides are for beginners who've trained a little and everyone else on up to experts. SAG and rest stop and bike support team are great.

Dale put up a site for the ride. He says rest stops will stay open as long as the paying customers are out. That's good after last year's Tour de Guilford had a rest stop on a spur (extra skating and cycling required off the main course) and when we arrived they had checked out. Admittedly we were slow that day, but had paid and there was no posted cutoff time on that one. It won't be a problem at this ride, I'm confident.

Register by 7.30am and roll by 8.30. Apex roads are smooth with gentle hills - nothing too steep.

A few years back they said they were unable to let skaters join in (or at least pay to join in!) so we skated and sent the money later and didn't return. But last year they invited skaters back. This year, well, I don't have the bucks, so i have to miss it, but it'll be a great one and the Tour to Tanglewood
Bicycle Response Team will be there to help out. Should be great. I think it's $40 on the day if you show up.
Register by 7.30 and roll by 8.30. Hillsborough has larger & lengthier hills than Apex,NC but the final route will determine severity.
