Fabian Cancellara Wins Tour of California Prologue: Levi Leipheimer 2nd, David Zabriske 3rd, Armstrong 10th

OK I got back just in time to watch some of the eventual leaders come in. Svein Tuft hung on for 9th, and finished ahead of Lance Armstrong, who finished 10th, by a tenth of a second or so. Something to remember for Tuft, I'm sure. At the front, it's no surprise the Fabian Cancellara was tops. Levi was 2nd, 1.2 seconds behind. It had begun to rain lightly by the time Floyd Landis and Levi Leipheimer had hit the course, so I wonder if Levi might have done a touch better without that spinkles...but that's racing, as they say. David Zabriske wore the stars and stripes as US champ into 3rd in the time trial. After that, it was Michael Rogers, Thor Hushovd, George Hincapie, Tom Boonen, Mark Renshaw, Svein Tuft, Lance Armstrong and Mark Cavendish. For the Doper's Delight category (no there isn't one), though it may or may not carry weight for the rest of the Tour of California, acknowledged dopers returned from banishments with somewhat less than unbridled success, though (only?) 16 to 21 seconds or so behind the leaders in a four and a half minute event: Ivan Basso (67th), Tyler Hamilton (72nd), and Floyd Landis (91st). Stage 1 is tomorrow at 3pm Eastern time, from Davis to Santa Rosa, California, 107.6-miles.

Mancebo Takes Stage 1, Cancellara and Sastre Out

Mancebo took Stage 1 bringing up more doping discussions (he was implicated in Operacion Puerto though I guess it's unresolved). Prologue winner Cancellara dropped out due to illness (fever), while TdF champ Sastre crashed and Landis flatted. It was a strange day all around, with video blackouts and the race shortened due to weather. I didn't see it. Just read about it.
