Georgia Cycling Grand Prix Series to Visit Gwinnett County Northeast of Atlanta Georgia in 2009

Gwinnett County, bisected by I-85 northeast of Atlanta with the modest water tower reading, Success Lives Here, or some such, is showing signs of wanting to be involved in local and regional pro cycling events. The Gwinnett Sports Commission is a cosponsor of the ten-event Georgia Cycling Grand Prix. According to the Gwinnett Daily Post report:

The first is the TopView Classic, scheduled for Feb. 28 to March 1 in Lawrenceville. The other two Gwinnett events will surround Bike Fest - the June 27-28 Cycle for Parkinson's in Dacula and Lawrenceville and the Aug. 29-30 Summer Finale Weekend in Lawrenceville and Loganville.

The schedule also includes races in Albany, Augusta, Sandy Springs, Dahlonega and Beaufort, S.C. For more information, visit www.GeorgiaCycling.net.

It'll be interesting to see if any long slow rides for the teletubbies and sub-pro wannabees crowds will be included. If so, we might have to be there for some of this. In any case, I think this is a great boost for those down in the handlebars over the loss of Tour de Georgia at least for 2008. Hopefully there'll be some roadskater friendly happenings going on, and if not, seeing colorfully attired cyclists in pain is good. The Athens Twilight Criterium has welcomed skaters some years, and the Gambler has been a fun roadskate more than once along the way.
