Inline Skating Pre-Teens Call to Help Sixty-Year-Old Snoozer Driving on Drugs: Now Who Do You Want to Keep Off the Streets?

roadskater's picture

Here's one reason to keep street skaters on the road where they belong if they have the skills (just like cyclists who have the skills, and automobilists, too). That way, they can keep an eye on the neighborhood and watch out for the safety of adults who can't control themselves and go out driving around after first buying, then using drugs.

"Three boys around the age of 12 called police around 11:15 a.m. after they watched the woman drive slowly past them while they were rollerblading on Allen Avenue. They reported seeing the vehicle weaving back and forth on the road and hit a curb before it stopped. They reportedly observed the woman slumped over the center console of the vehicle, so they called for help."

These three young skaters may very well have saved at least one life and maybe more than one! [I deleted the comments about local court cases for now.]

Kudos my skateys for being observant and taking action to help. You deserve an award from your city council, I say, not the least for observing Newton's Laws! How about some new wheels and bearings! The bearings to the city, yes!

I'm curious about those pills. The article says observers say the woman said (ha!) that "she had taken a sleeping pill around 4 a.m. and it must have kicked in while she was driving." That would be around 7 hours later. How do those warnings go?

"TAKE SIX HOURS IN ADVANCE OF THE DESIRED DROWSINESS AND REMEMBER TO OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY IF THE PILLS DO NOT KICK IN AND MAKE YOU SLEEP."

See all you skaredydults? If you had these kids penned up in a skate park or stuck inside with the remote game controller, there's no telling how long the lady might've slept with the car in Drive with the engine on.

You go young rollers, you are my hero today.

I wish the sleepy Newtonian the best, as I know what it is like to have a strange sleep schedule at times, and I am really glad nothing all that bad happened as far as we know. So while I jest a bit, drug interactions obviously happen to many. What's important is that we be careful about sleeping when there's a chance we are driving. And like these young skate heroes, stay, and call for help in case that slumped over person might need it!

Skateylove!

Life, trust, blind faith

Driving Idiocy: it's not just for lost real-estate agents or people who talk with their hands any more. And for the former, I notice even the advent of the on-board GPS has done nothing to solve that problem.

Texting, holding a phone up to your ear with one hand, drinking coffee, pouring coffee, putting on make-up, nail polish, reaching down to retrieve an item on the passenger side, being under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, sleeping pills, prescription medication... We've had this conversation before.

Does confining kids to skate parks cause more accidents? If Homer (Simpson) hadn't gone back in the time machine and squashed that bug, it wouldn't be raining donuts right now. Oh well, if people didn't think this way, we wouldn't have annoying words like 'causality'. And while I'm throwing words on the trash heap...let's lob 'functionality' and 'duality' on there too.

Sorry. Lost the plot.

In this instance, I like this way of thinking, Roadskater! This is a nice story and it's great to hear when premature deaths are averted. I think about this every time a car doesn't cross the centre line and hit me head-on. Now that my son is almost old enough to drive himself around, I am preoccupied to the point of daily hysteria about the infinite causes of death on the roads. Have you noticed how many people run red lights at 50 mph a good two seconds after the light is red?!

For all those with trust issues: consider the colossal amount of confidence you place in all those other drivers on the road at the same time as you. These are complete strangers! Yet you are trusting them not only to know and obey the rules of the road, but to be awake, to want to stay alive, to have insurance, to have a car that is mechanically sound, and not to engage in anything else but operating that heavy machinery.

Whilst driving to the local High School the other day, I was following a lady driving her car all over the road. I was behind her, so could only watch helplessly as she veered into the path of the oncoming teens leaving school for the day. This was far beyond the typical texting motions. From the way she was jumping around inside her car, I was imagining a jar full of spiders escaping onto her lap, or that she had spilled a bright red drink or the ebola virus all over the cabin. She couldn't hear me yelling 'pull over, ya stupid woman!'. It just came out as "Honk Honk! Honk honk honk honk honk!!". I arrived late to the school, so the traffic cop had gone by the time I got there, but I would like to think that the swerving driver had heard my horn-blasting and pulled herself together, at least temporarily.

I'm glad the person under the influence of sleeping pills in the story didn't kill one or all of those 12 year olds. Skaters or not.
