Ken's Bike Shop T2T Training Ride Preview Notes

roadskater's picture
here are some notes on the ken's training ride as experienced in years from 2001 to last year. we're not sure about this year's route because ken's bike shop has moved, so if anyone finds out, please reply here and on InlineNC if you will.

ken's ride has always (for me) started in reynolda village in winston salem. the route went through a trail into wake forest university. this was beautiful unless wet, then slick especially for those of me that don't pay enough attention always. then it was a right uphill and over down moderately left turn through houses of professors and such, then up through part of the campus by waite chapel, right past soccer fields, right out of the uni and briefly onto a moderately busy road quickly onto 2-lane roads.

a brisk downhill manageable to the crossing of peter's creek pkwy i think it is (this is the busy road). across to a very challenging hill (the steep one on the way back), then some undulating straight road and lots of nice rural mostly down undulations to the rest stop at the church.

after that a long downhill section of gator that has become mild gator over the years with a down sweeping blind right with a slight up before going into an nc hwy 2-lane. on this road briefly and safe enough feeling passing a small post office (perhaps germantown). then a switchback left onto red bank or barn, something like that. this is a four-mile mostly uphill from mild to moderate, with goats on the left near a cornfield on the right just before a sweet sweep right around a picturesque church with flowers just past that on the sides of the road, up to the rest stop church.

after that it's loop or return through the undulations. steep downhill with grass on the side for speed control but a serious mistake if you don't stop for the road at the bottom, as the only run out is to the right and sketchy. then a climb that hurts more than i ever think it will having not remembered how easy the downhill had been, then fairly level, back to the uni, the trail, to a nice finish in reynolda. that's what i remember. many photos available on links with ken's in the title at
