The 2nd Annual Roadskater.net Carolina Century for Multiple Sclerosis rolled
out at 730AM and 900AM, starting at Gospel Baptist Church near NC-150 and
North Church Street in Greensboro. Full reports later, but despite bad weather
(predicted and actual, which turned to glorious sunshine and blue skies by afternoon),
the Carolina Century riders and volunteers raised a good chunk of change for people with MS,
and many completed their first or second century. Three skaters finished the
century (my fourth 100-plus-miler, 120 being my maximum miles skated in a day), while
others completed 42, 31 and 21 miles on a tough morning of wind and rain. The
volunteers were amazing and came prepared for many more than the happy few who
showed up for the cause, regardless of the weather. Thanks to all who attended and/or
donated, and it's not too late to go to to donate for 2009.
The photos here are from three sources: the vast majority are from the road
from my camera (which was so soaked by mile 31 or so it would not turn on
until mile 75 or so); a few dozen shots at the start/finish are by Marianne;
and a handful of photos at the start are by Dale Brown of Cyclesdeoro.com. Thanks guys!
Photos from Marianne and Dale are marked with suffixes ranging from n through z.
As the photos show, the 2009 Carolina Century ended on a bittersweet and
somber note, as the volunteers learned (and later told the last three of us who
finished the 102 miles) of a hit and run crash a few hundred yards up the road.
Then we all learned it had been fatal. Reports indicate that authorities have
charged Grayson Warren Dawson with killing David Sherman head-on while she was
driving on the wrong side of the road (for which she has been charged multiple times),
driving without proper license (for which she has been charged multiple times), then
leaving him by the roadside without stopping to offer comfort or to seek assistance
from witnesses nearby.
All who drive or have loved ones who use the roads should take note and take action.
Whenever it is better for a person to flee the scene of a crime (even if caught later!) this
is an opportunity to modify the law. Whenever it is better for a person to fail to
appear for court than to face the charges, this is an opportunity to change our
legal system. When people repeatedly drive without a license or with a revoked
license, they are showing us that the only way to stop them from driving is to
take their liberty.
We as a society may have failed to avoid this needless death through lack of
enforcement of the law. And as of this writing, the accused person is not in jail,
but free to roam, perhaps to drive. If she's guilty, she only did what we let her
do by looking the other way while she kept driving badly and kept her freedom.
