Two Roadskater.net skaters and two Roadskater.net cyclists made it out to
the Cycles de Oro Tour to Tanglewood Training Ride this year. Others pondered
the condition of Greensboro roads from Winston-Salem and decided to stay closer
to their homes. Hopefully they had a great skate too, but they missed a fine day
of river and lake crossings on the familiar and fun Cycles de Oro route. In hopes
of attracting some more skaters, I had scouted an alternative long-cut route that
added 0.2 miles but avoided the two-block-long downhill into Latham Road. The gap
in the photos on our alternate route (L on Dover, R on Blair, L on Cleburne, R on
Nottingham, L on Latham...a bit more complicated than otherwise due to construction)
was due to taking video along the alternate route. I had checked with Dale the
day before to make sure it was OK with him for us to try this other route, and he
said no problem. We skaters can make the usual route fine but end up burning wheels
or brake pad rubber pretty quickly and early on in the route going the usual way.
We had a great time and had fine company along the way for much of the day.
The Bicycle Response Team did an extra fine job of alerting riders to some areas
where the route may have been uncertain to those not looking at the route sheets,
as several rides had recently used the same or similar markings. Route painting is
a big, nasty job, and it's easy to make mistakes. The best way to avoid getting lost,
of course, is to preview the turn sheet and check it often. Also, it helped me to
look at last year's maps to remind myself how it went then...but sometimes the route
changes from year to year as well, and often for the better. Cycles de Oro always puts
on a good training ride and supports lots of great local charity rides too, so drop
by and thank them some time when you can. Roadskaters certainly appreciate the warm
welcome from Dale from the beginning of our Tour to Tanglewood experience back in 1999.
