These photos are from 2001, before and after my buddy, Tim, and I ordered brand new
1997 Roces Enduro skates with 90mm wheels on eBay, then in Tim's office and shop,
we ground the frames enough to install 100mm scooter wheels. We did it. We don't
recommend it. Don't blame us if you break your asphalt, ok? Too much fun! Scooter
wheels were all that were available at the time as I recall, but faster wheels
made for speedskating would speed the kit up quite a bit. Note that I skated a lap
on just two wheels per frame, but the wheels heated dramatically and wear was extreme!
This is something to consider for long distance events like Tour to Tanglewood (90+ miles
in two days) and the Athens to Atlanta Roadskate (87+ miles in one day), especially
for heavier skaters. A five-wheel setup should exhibit less wear than a four-wheel
or especially a three-wheel frame configuration. It was an interesting experiment!
Skating on three or even two wheels on taller frames is a different experience,
and a great way to break the monotony. When you put your 4- or 5-wheel low profiler
setup back on it's sweetness!
