Six skaters showed up for the Paul's Cycling & Fitness Tour to Tanglewood
training ride. We had planned 30 or 36 miles, but rain and lightning changed
plans for all. Many waited through the rain and continued when they deemed
it safe. Many caught a SAG back provided by Paul's. A ride sounded good, but
we looked at the radar and JohnathanS and I decided to skate the short route instead.
We were afraid we'd be back at the shop last, or we would have done the 30 at
least. A little too late, I figured out there were a lot more people out a lot
longer than I figured, and we should have been fine taking the 30, especially had
we not stayed at the first stop for thirty minutes. The problem was the distant
thunder put a bit of a damper on rolling out early! Regardless, we got almost
twenty miles in, and they weren't flat miles, so it was an OK workout. Most of
the route was on Old US 52, which is a somewhat busy road, but drivers were
polite in every case from my experience. I made a mistake while on the route, and
regretted it, when I called out that there was a left turn at the bottom of
the hill. This tricky turn has been on previous routes, and it does require care
or simply bailing out stright if you can't make it. Sorry to anyone who heard me
and made any decisions based on my bad information! I think Paul's changed the
route to avoid this turn, but I think I like the old route a better still.
Old US 52 was fine but perhaps a bit less scenic and a bit more busy that previous
routes. Anyway, it was a fun day, and actually, more fun after the rain, because
before that, it was mighty steamy! I've complained about Paul's rides years ago,
but clearly they really did want a fun and safe day for everyone, and they took
great care getting folks home. Thanks to Paul's and the Tour for a nice skride.
