The Greensboro Velo Club hosts an annual free informal July 4 show'n'go called the
Red, White & Blue bike ride (and inline skate, ha). They let roadskaters join in
for a fun day out on the roads as most folk are taking a day off from the stresses
of driving in too much hurry. We planned to arrive early but got there with less
time than usual, so it was quick photos and hit the road without as much prep or
pleasantries as we'd've liked. The choices were 15, 41ish and something more, so
we planned to go for the middle choice. This meant we'd need to take it easy but
keep moving along as we could. Unfortunately, we were having too much fun and feeling
way too good after the first convenience store stop, and we missed a turn (no street sign,
and no mileage notes on the cue sheet). We were laid back about it on a gentle down
with the wind at our back...then we asked the first folk we saw who pointed behind us
to where Ironworks Road was. Ooops. So we ended up with 51.5 miles on a hot sunny day
where I was the weak link, methinks. It was tons of fun even with some pain, but I
missed my etrex Vista maps out there on the road. Thanks to GVC for letting us skate
along and to John H for checking on us later when we didn't arrive even as late as
expected!
