We had four roadskaters for one of the favorites of the year, the usually warm,
always hilly and beautiful Tour de Kale. We'll keep trying to get more skaters
for this one, as we love the people who run this event with so much joy! As for
me, well I think it was hot this year, and I wasn't handling it all that great,
especially by letting myself go out too fast in the excitement of photographing!
We had to stand around a long time before our event rolled out, so next year,
I think we might need to just sit and wait instead of standing. The delay was
so the fast ones on the short route wouldn't get in front of the fast ones on
the long route, I think. In any case, my feet were a half hour more sore than
I wished by the start of it. But we rolled out with a lot of friendly cyclists
we knew from ten years on the road. The weather was fine, we hit some fast hills
early, and knew we'd pay later in the day when it was hotter and we had to get
back the altitude. Artem flew by on his way to chase bikes all day, and MikeB
vowed against better advice to stick with us no matter what, insisting he would
not want to repeat last year, where he was faster earlier than later. Eebee was
strong on the hills as I recall and I just tried to stay cool and hydrated, and
to stay within my numbers well enough not to totally bonk before the finish, which
includes a few final insults before the return to Denton Farm Park, where a
vintage surface gives one last rattle to the soles and shins before ice towels
and awesome smiles make you realize you'll be back next year for more sweet punishment!
