Tour de Lions is always great and is usually the first real test of our early season
fitness, or lack thereof. We missed some skaters we've usually seen there, but two
joined us...one from the Charlotte/Rock Hill area and another from the Triangle.
As I was taking photos I heard a clickety-clickety-clickety and pointed it out,
but thought it was just a trashed brearing or some such, and it was time to go!
The wheel was spinning OK it seems, and again, it was time to go! So we took off
and continued along for just under an hour or so before it was clear things were not
going to get magically better. We stopped at a tricky switchback after a downhill, and
I optimistically decided the rear axle bolt was just a bit loose. Let's go! After the next
downhill, I was getting reports that the wheel was wobbling or jumping around or something.
I knew it was still vibrating or resonating or whatever, and stopped again, this time taking
off the wheel and handing it to the others to take a look as I swapped the third wheel back
to the fourth position. It turns out that 5 of the 8 hub spokes were cracked, some of them
quite visibly by then! Well no wonder I was finding things a bit tougher than expected even
for late spring. I skated the rest of the Tour de Lions 2009 44-mile route with seven wheels
and it was no problem at all, with only more wear on the three-wheel side versus the four.
Thanks to my three roadskater pals it was all good and all safe. The Tour de Lions is a great
local charity ride with easy and short to long and challenging routes, and roadskaters are very
welcome and have been for several years now. Come on out and do some good for others and yourself too!
