Speedskating Season is Starting and During an Olympic Year it Matters

This is a brief note to point to an article about pro long track speedkating season. The one that matters to me, at least. No disrespect intended to the short track derby, but I like mostly non-contact sport contests of speed. The first turn of an F1 race is admittedly often an exception.

This weekend pro long track starts again, and TeamUSA has some experienced skaters leading up to the Olympics. Notably, Shani Davis, a great speedskater over the years, returns. Also Heather (Richardson) Bergsma, from High Point, NC, is back on the ice for another year always being a threat to win the gold. I don't know how or if I'll be able to catch this off the airwaves or streams, but might make an attempt. Former inliner Joey Mantia will also be on the team!

2010 Giro d'Italia starts Saturday

The 2010 Giro d'Italia begins this Saturday with an 8.4 km time trial in Amsterdam. The first grand tour of the season begins with three stages in the Netherlands before returning to Italy for the balance of the event.

While not as ceremony-heavy as last year's centennial Giro, the 2010 event could still be very interesting. There's no heavy favorite to wear the maglia rosa, and the tour returns this year to the steep climbs and spectacular views of the Dolomites.

Watch Hours of Free Internet TV Speed Skating (Long Track and Short) On Demand and Live with Highlights and Recaps

Oh I am so sorry I didn't look this up before, even when I saw press releases earlier this year. I just never quite got to it until now. But now is good too. If you wish you could see long track and short track ISU world cup events on your television, well you might sometimes, but on your computer, you can see many hours of video from this year's world cup season in both track formats. I've only watched a bit but it looks and sounds and feels great!

Davis wins 1500-meter Ice Speedskating World Cup Race, Heerenveen, Netherlands

Shani Davis continues his winning ways and certainly is close to taking a season win as well. No time to go into this now, but he's really doing great. Also Kristina Groves of Ottawa seems to be doing well lately. Not sure on the timeliness of these as they reference different locations. Gotta go! Enjoy...

Shani Davis Shows How to Skate: Full Extension, Heel Push

Check out this article on Shani Davis, who was amazing last year in the World Cup season (indoor long track) and has taken three of four individual events in his specialties this year already. The news may be aimed at the X vs. Y junk (now that elections are mostly over) between Davis and Hedrick, who joined with Trevor Marsicano to place 2nd in the team pursuit, but the most important part may be the photo (apparently from the 2006 Olys, eh?).
