A Yellow Bike to Ride Alone

This one's for those who don't want to ride alone. I had a purple sparkluscious banana high-rise for wheelies to the pool. But later, my first 10-speed was an inexpensive, road-stripe yellow Japanese no-namer, with gears by a company nobody knew of called Shimano. "Prob'ly never be any good," some folk said.

I rode hilly miles to the valley for native brook fishing in the clear crystal flows and deep cool shadows of the Blue Ridge. The solo ride and the focused solitude of trout fishing without much success rejuvenated my village self to return the hills.

Alabama Tornado Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Pleasant Grove, Volunteer Information: How Can I Help?

Of course you can always donate money to the Red Cross and countless other organizations (please do), which you can find listed alongside many tornado outbreak news articles. But it's a little harder to find where to actually show up or who to call to register for hands-on help in Alabama, probably partially because thousands of volunteers showing up out of the blue might add to the problem. However, there are some smaller organizations advertising for volunteer help needed. I know other states were hit too, including the state where I live, but I believe it's a Cat-in-the-Hat situation in Alabama (...And this mess is so big and so deep and so tall, we cannot pick it up, there is no way at all). I think the ratio of hands to rubble is far worse than in Georgia.

New info added April 30th 2011!!

Imagine Winning World Championships in Speedskating and Cycling in the Same Year...Twice

I sometimes imagine winning my age group in a small enough race where there might be one or two others in my group. Ha! Imagine winning the world championships in speedskating. Then imagine that same year taking the world championships in cycling! Thirty years ago, that's what Sheila Young did. Check out the great form and how close she sets down to the snow-marked lane edge in the photo attached to the story below...
