Skating William B. Umstead State Park

roadskater's picture

Raleigh recently was hit by a storm that did some damage to some of the trails which have been discussed on InlineNC and TSC, but I was lucky enough to skate the Capital Area Greenway before that.

On the way out of town, I revisited the Umstead State Park from the Glenwood Avenue (US 70 in Raleigh) side. (This is not the Glenwood Avenue in Greensboro of which I often speak of course.) A couple of years ago I asked about skating there and the current people in charge said ok. Your experience may vary, but I would think this worth a try, as campers there might skate and bike the road also. It's about 4.5 miles if you do it all except the service road (which quickly becomes gravel) and if you do the campground loop. I made a gmap-pedometer map and saved it so you can take a look:

the campground loop is nice, but one might want to stay out of the loop when it is crowded. on that sunday in june there were only 2 or 3 campsites taken. I'd think Umstead is more of a spring/fall/winter camping area but I don't have data for that. It could be an excellent option for folk needing an inexpensive alternative for spending the night in Raliegh. In fact, I'll add another dream to the list: to camp at Umstead and skate there, plus do the Capital Area Greenway again when it's looking good.
