Skateboarders and Roadskaters in Midlife Lack of Crisis: Skate Old or Die!

Now and then we like to stand up for skateboarders, who we don't always understand in terms of their love for wheels not attached to their feet, but don't need to understand...just support with some skateylove. All over ever day we see people jealously looking at the little wheels. Ours. The street boarders'. Even the big wheels and carbon fibre. We just want to say it again. Yes you can. Get a helmet and some wrist guards. Wear some old jeans and even knee and elbow pads if you like. But yes you can. And if you survive a few times at inline skating, skateboarding or cycling with an ending of fun and safety, you can do it for decades. Don't just try it out wherever. Go somewhere safe and flat and prepared. It's important to have fun and be safe so you won't freak out and never try again. So yes that's all repeated thought, but OK.

Meanwhile, take a look at what a skateboarder has to say...

Teaching Skating and What Skating Teaches in War and Peace

This is another piece that ends up leaning toward pimping some brands, but OK, when the brands have put some bucks into helping kids of war learn to skate and love...at least love to skate. What gets me here is how many things Percovich has tried, where he's been, and how exceptionally well he speaks at least in moments of this interview.

Benefits of Inline Skating (Rollerblading), Roller Skating, Biking Over Organized Sports and Other Forms of Adolescent Exercise

Check this out! Meredith Cohn of the Baltimore Sun gets credit for a piece with a subtitle you can't beat:
Hopkins study finds that kids who skateboard or Rollerblade stay fit longer that those who play organized sports

You go, loosely organized but not by adults skaters...

The Secret to Weight Loss and Maintaining Your Target Weight

Whilst snooping around the personal finance and get-out-of-debt blogs, I tapped into the personal weight-loss blogs. In following the ADHD links to the maze of other such webpages, I found some funny blog titles, like "Over 40, in debt and overweight". Yes, in 2007 there are countless people still struggling in vain to lose excess weight. They all seem to believe that food deprivation and other people's idea of exercise are the only solutions. Will this hopelessly cruel and debilitating cycle ever end?

Helmet Lights for Inline Skating (Rollerblading) Cycling (Bicycling, Biking)

Below is a series of emails about various helmet lights, in reverse order of posting date:

Huston: Bob's inquiry & my recent ventures in solo nightskating re-stimulated my search for lighting. Here's what I found:

Silver Comet Skate/Ride on Memorial Day 2007

From: Huston Sent: Monday, May 21, 2007 3:12:02 PM Dave/Barry, thanks for the update. I was going to check out the road section on the Covenant Christian Century on Sat., but a big dog rudely jumped in front of me before I got there. I had no choice but to hit him, which propelled me over the handlebars & onto the pavement. So I spent the rest of the day at Floyd General being treated for a broken collarbone & rib. So no skating, cycling or dancing for me. So, I'm entertaining offers for my registration. Huston

Concrete Replica of Philly's Love Park at Skatepark in Peterborough, England?

The Big Lottery Fund in the UK is working wonders for getting kids off the streets and into skateparks via a fraction of half the money raised through the National Lottery. They have contributed to many skateparks, one in Wales that converted a disused factory. I have often gazed wistfully upon many an abandoned WalMart, visions of smooth tracks, beginner's hills, cafe and skateshop swirling in my head.

Kids & Adults Criminals for Skating or Biking Commerce GA

Let's face it, when it comes to banning healthy if sometimes risky athletic pastimes of youngsters and adults, city councils are forgetting those freedoms they so often talk about at election time, when the specific freedom in question doesn't involve something they want to do. They even forget that adults are affected by laws they pass to control children. You can hear the "let's keep government off the little guy's back" whenever it suits them, but the really little guy or group had better watch out because everybody else for sure knows what's best for them.

Kickbike Scooter Bike and Kickspark Scooter Sled

Check out this article on the Kickbike, which seems like a nice alternative in certain situations... It has brakes and a front wheel somewhat like a regular bike, with a smaller rear wheel. No gears or crank, of course, so it is lighter and more workout one would imagine! This could be a hit for a lot of touristy situations I think, since it is usable with perhaps a wider range of clothing and shoes with no bike chain to worry about. I don't know as I've never ridden one, but I'd like to give one a ride at the beach sometime!

Beware of Dogs NYC Walkers, Runners, Skaters, Cyclists, 9pm to 9am

Of course you already are on the lookout between 9am and 9pm (and the rest of the day), but now there's extra good reason. I have no dog in this fight, as I have no dog any more and have not been hanging in the city of late, but I've been afraid of dogs off the leash before of course. My typical reaction is to say "hey puppy" in a helium voice a la Broadway Danny Rose no matter how big the dog.
