Oh boy! More stuff to contemplate on Performance Enhancement and Perceived Effort.
This all started with a BBC article, discussed and listed below. There's also a linked video, which I found well worth watching, and interesting. Some of the video addresses simple things athletes can do to improve performance, most of them not new, but an offhand comment about "NOT spending energy controlling emotions" was fascinating. See some of my notes and quotations in a separate comment below.
If you've ever used a TENS machine for pain, you know that Transcutaneous Electro Neural Stimulation can be useful. It really helped me stay off of pain drugs when I had some back pain. Some of the other modes of the machine might be helpful as well for recovery exercise ("Russian mode").

There's even more to this one! This runner can't navigate and even remember everything short term after surgery to address seizures! This is inspiring to say the least. Check out the article with details and see the tracker link here...
Roadskater posed the
question briefly during one of our recent Silver Comet Trail skates: "What's that
calorie-per-pound number again?". I believed I knew the subject well until
I started to try to talk about it, whereby I realized the 3,500 number pertains
only to fat loss. So I made a note to revisit an article I had read by Tom
Venuto, on fitwatch.com.
Venuto refers to a study
by Dr. Kevin Hall (an 'investigator' at the National Institute of Health in
Bethesda, MD) published in the International Journal of Obesity sometime in
2008, researching the 'mechanisms regulating human body weight'.

Wow... What do you say after skating for 24 hours? Well, first off I want to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to our AWESOME support team! Andrea, Maria, Renee, and Dawn -- YOU ROCK! In fact, we need to create a whole new verb that adequately describes how much you rock. And another BIG THANKS to Brian Shicoff for organizing everything, and to Lawrence for really making me earn that silver medal, and to Bryan McKenney for rounding out our team of Americans determined to fulfill Brian's dream of sweeping the podium... (lol)

The word from Dave W last night on the phone was that Mark placed second overall in the Solo division of the 24-Hour skate race in Montréal QC at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Way to go Mark! I can't wait to hear how many miles he logged! Congratulations to the other participants, especially Brian S. Please let us know your stats and experiences, guys!
As many of you are already aware at the end of this years A2A I paid a visit to the ER. The symptoms and diagnosis were something that I was not previously familiar with and I wanted to share my memories in the hope that you might recognise them in yourself or someone else in the future.
It took us longer than expected to skate from Athens to Atlanta for a number of reasons. These are not meant as excuses or complaints just background.
