Shani Davis Shows How to Skate: Full Extension, Heel Push

Check out this article on Shani Davis, who was amazing last year in the World Cup season (indoor long track) and has taken three of four individual events in his specialties this year already. The news may be aimed at the X vs. Y junk (now that elections are mostly over) between Davis and Hedrick, who joined with Trevor Marsicano to place 2nd in the team pursuit, but the most important part may be the photo (apparently from the 2006 Olys, eh?).

Greatest Olympians: Don't Forget Eric Heiden

Noticed a link to this editorial in the "Speedskating" sidebar:

Published August 25, 2008 10:30 pm - Heiden's accomplishment merits discussion in greatest-ever debate

EDITORIAL: Famed Lake Placid Olympian Eric Heiden overshadowed by Michael Phelps

[...]Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Pavo Nurmi, Bjorn Dahlie and Mark Spitz among others, have all been mentioned as those Phelps has surely surpassed.

Joey Cheek Talks About Darfur and the Olympics

I'm a couple of weeks slow in getting this up, but there's a video clip online of Olympic ice speedskating champion and Greensboro native Joey Cheek talking to Stephen Colbert about human rights abuses in Darfur and why his visa to attend this summer's Beijing Olympics was suddenly revoked. I thought that he came across very well.

Olympic Medalist Shalane Flanagan Was Gone To Carolina In Her Mind

US Olympic distance runner Shalane Flanagan was coming off some sort of stomach bug in the first week of the games, and found herself back mid-pack after the start of her 10,000 meter race. To get through the tough effort of working her way up through the field, she imagined herself back on the trails that she trains on in the NC Triangle Area, including the American Tobacco Trail:

100 Police on Rollerblades (Inline Skates) Guard Olympic Torch Relay in Paris

OK it's not too important, but I'm always fascinated by any mention of the inline skating police in Paris. This seems a not so wonderful way to catch criminals, so I guess their duty is limited to situations where they're just a helpful resource. Only in movies where the thiefs run straight down a sidewalk or road conveniently would the skates be that great for the chase. However, being included in any honor guard that includes motorbikes and firefighters is pretty nice. We're on a thin schedule of reinforcement, we skaters!

Jennifer Rodriguez Switches from Speedskating to Track Pursuit Cycling

Here's a very interesting article by Sharon Robb on Olympic speedskater Jennifer Rodriguez and her switch to competitive cycling, her effort to reach the Olympic level in a the sport, and more. It mentions the Brian Piccolo velodrome where skaters and cyclists work out together on separate tracks. It is a great facility. For a brief movie of the place see my minimovie at:

Minutes of CIC FIRS Meeting Show Efforts for Olympics, World Games

Minutes from last September's CIC Meeting show the efforts made by FIRS (International Roller Sports Federation) to get roller (inline) speed skating into the Olympic program. It is clear the CIC and FIRS representatives felt angry and perhaps misled about the opportunity...
