Watch Indoor Inline and Quad Speed Skating USARS National Championships Live Free Online

Oy. Sorry to be a bit late on this catch, but I got a note from some of our Tour to Tanglewood Roadskater.net team, saying they were off to the Nationals. I didn't follow up and they didn't tell me how to watch, but I finally got around to checking on it, and here's the info.

I haven't looked at results so I don't know how they did. I missed a lot of it but the relays are today (Thursday) and there are some solo races left too, at least in the novice inline division. The quad speed events are yet to come, and that could be fun to watch too.

ISU Long Track World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships 2009 Richmond CAN Olympic Oval Four Days of Free Internet TV

Submitted by roadskater on March 11, 2009 - 7:55am.

After last week's Salt Lake City (Kearns) Utah championships, where Shani Davis set two world records, the speed skaters head for what they say is the slower ice of Richmond, BC, to the oval where next year's Winter Olympics will be contested. There's controversy over whether the Canadian hosts have been allowing teams free access to the rink, but i don't care so much about that. If they want a home rink advantage, so be it. If they want to seem gracious and accomodating, so be that too.

Double Yes! Shani Davis USA Second World Record in 24 Hours (1000m), Marsicano Second Again

Yay! I can't wait to see some of this racing. Things are looking good for next year's Olympics! This is from a good piece worth a look below...

Speedskater Trevor Marsicano had never skated especially fast in the 1,000 meters, by international racing standards. His best time ranked only modestly inside the top 100 of all-time.

Oh boy! Congratulations to Shani Davis for setting a new world record in Kearns, UT Friday. Davis surpassed the old record by a fifth of a second (plus a hundredth) to finish in 1:41:80.

Here are a couple of articles in advance of the World Cup this weekend (Friday and Saturday, free admission!).

Americans Shani Davis and
Chad Hedrick are among the other top skaters who will compete in the
final meet of the World Cup season, aiming to secure season titles --
Davis leads the circuit at both 1,000 and 1,500 meters -- and enjoy a
springboard into the World Single Distance Championships next weekend
in Vancouver as well as the upcoming Olympic year.  [sltrib.com]

What's your Inline-Skating, Cycling or Running Training Style: Periodization, Marathon-Training, or Haphazard?

With this year's outdoor inline training season ahead, I've been wondering how I should best spend the precious time available to me and reap the best skate training rewards later in the year.

There's a whole lot of skating going on in Harbin (Haerbin) China. I've been following some of the stories and looking at photos this week, without a whole lot to say about it, since I don't know much about these young athletes.

Here's one way to find some good stuff...

Vote for Your Favorite Ice Speedskating Video in Contest from Canada

Submitted by roadskater on February 24, 2009 - 7:47am.

If you have a few minutes to watch some videos about ice speedskating stories indoors and out, check out this contest where you can vote on which ones go to the next round. I assume United Statesians can vote! Check out the video from Canada's skaters...

Methinks thou must yield thine (or someone's!) email address to vote...or at least something that looks like an email address. But watching the videos is fine for me.

30,000-Square-Foot Roller Rink Opens in Manhattan 8th Ave 59th Street New York City

While researching some roller and inline topics last night I came across a wonderful news item about the first night in a new skating rink about to open. With 30,000 square feet of rolling space, this place would hold a ton of skaters for a fad sweeping the nation.

In December of 1884. Almost 125 years ago!

Davis wins 1500-meter Ice Speedskating World Cup Race, Heerenveen, Netherlands

Shani Davis continues his winning ways and certainly is close to taking a season win as well. No time to go into this now, but he's really doing great. Also Kristina Groves of Ottawa seems to be doing well lately. Not sure on the timeliness of these as they reference different locations. Gotta go! Enjoy...

High Point NC Woman Speedskater Makes the Transition from Inline to Ice for the Olympics

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on February 9, 2009 - 9:17pm.

A few years ago at the US10K I met Heather Richardson from High Point Speed, just briefly, not a long chat or anything. But it was clear she was a powerful skater even at 10K, which is lots longer than most indoor types really want to do very often (that's a lot of laps on the tiny indoor inline circuits). The Greensboro News & Record has a nice story on her, point out that...

Richardson, a 19-year-old from High Point, is the reigning U.S.
champion in long-track speedskating's sprint events and recently
finished 20th at the World Sprints.

Rollerblading Inline Skating Artist from Vermont Paints with Skates

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on September 3, 2008 - 6:53pm.

Here's a brief article about an artist who likes to paint with her skates. It might be a new way to paint, but it's not really a new way to skate, methinks. Vermont seems like a pretty nice place to live...summer at least! Probably I'd get used to dealing with snow again, and I might even get addicted to skiing again...or outdoor ice...but right now, I'm imagining snotcicles and it just has no appeal! Talk about gunk in your bearings, I'd say this painting is a bit messy but really how far do you have to go to skate on a canvas?

New Roadskater.net Member from Canmore, Alberta, Canada

Submitted by Marianne on August 5, 2008 - 12:10am.

Hi All: My name is Marianne and I am a new member of roadskater.net. I live in Canmore, Alberta, Canada. I will be skating A2A for the first time. From all the things I read on the web it sounds like a very exciting journey. Unfortunately there are not many inline skaters in this town. We have quite a big ice speed skating community, but they all train in Calgary in the summer.

An Ancient 27-Year Old Hits the Ice for Some Speedskating Fun

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on March 3, 2008 - 2:17pm.

Funny how my parents think I'm young, and I think I'm old sometimes, young others, mostly depending if I've been forced to look in a mirror, or to look at my hands, or help me, otherwise be faced with reality of that sort. The inner reality is often far different, and yay for that....

Sparkles Speed Skaters Blurring By on a Wednesday Night

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on January 3, 2008 - 12:55am.

I had a chance to hang out with eebee a bit while she was working on a project to promote skating a bit. We both took our cameras to see what we'd get, ill equipped as we were, without some of my fun lenses. We got to see some new folk and some fellow Athens to Atlanta and US10K veterans as well. I was mostly chilling and hoping to capture a photo of the day or two or more. Anyway, here's a sample that's not likely suitable for print but it sure is fun the ghostly way it turned out.

Glasgow Scotland UK 2014 Games Bring Inline Skating and Cycling Velodrome

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on November 13, 2007 - 4:01am.

As part of the Commonwealth Games in 2014, Glasgow, Scotland, UK will be getting an indoor cycling velodrome which will also house an "inline skating facility." I wondered if that might be a banked track within the velodrome like they have in Florida and Colorado (outdoor tracks, both), or if it will be just some area to skate in while cyclists fly by on a wooden track. That's not so bad! I wondered if there's any chance inline skating will be included as a demonstration sport, but the list of sports, while including netball, fails to include skating as far as I could tell.

Here's another event, and this one's important if you can manage a reply, so I can plan for dinner. Things may change but as it stands we'll shoot for being at Lucky 32 by 6:45. The main thing to reply about is "will you attend the team dinner this year, wherever or whenever it happens to be?" The team dinner, like the Prologue Skride, is optional and open, but may not be too interesting to those not skating or riding or visiting the tour. You may add invitees to either RSVP. Let me know ASAP! I'll have the jerseys at dinner as well.

How I Lost Two Afternoons Happily: Georgia Aquarium and Web Cam

Well I held on the my sign of the beast 666 skateylove ranking long enough. It's time to let it go. What better way than to lose myself under water, sort of. An aquarium within a zoo. I'll explain.

So, how long have you been skating?

sommemi's picture
Submitted by sommemi on October 10, 2006 - 11:59am.

Ok, just figured since I'm kinda new to this whole "online community of skaters" that I would introduce myself.

HI. I'm Misty.

Oh, I guess I should say a little more. I'll try to keep it to a minimum. I tend to talk a lot. WARNING: This skater will not shut up.

So I wanted to tell you all about the other thing that we do on skates - dancing! Every winter we put on a party with routines to music - the Skater's Winter Snowball in Farmington, and every summer we put together a routine for the parade (also to music). Here is a link to video and pictures of this years snowball (see who you can recognize!) http://www.cdsdetroit.com/2-25-06-swsb/page.html
