Inline Skating 50 Miles on the Silver Comet Trail, July 4, 2012: Slow but Time on Skates and Calorie Burning

Notes from the trail...but first in reply to sam's glowing reviews of the Roadskater.net jersey...

Ha! If you want one of those jerseys, the deadline is past, but put in the order and i'll ask them to add it and refund if they can't.

Available in ROYGBVM and this year's mystery color (latter for $10 less). Supersweet 19" zip. Comfy wicking fabric. 3 pockets on back. All that. Injected with skateylove yes and grateful to be skateful.

We did 50 miles rolling out at 2:36p. Getting ready in the mile 0 parking lot we both thought it felt hotter than any time we had been there.

Periodization and the Preseason - or: I Thought I Could Do Those Inline Skating Drills

So here we are in the Preseason, per Rob Bell's Periodization article I referred to for the Offseason. This should be a six week block of low-intensity technique work (drills), and cross-training (if you like that sort of thing).

Just as I feared, the Offseason threw me out of my routine and into a funk-and-a-half. So it's taking me some time to get into the Preseason groove. Although there is something alluring about having nothing to do for half an hour except focus on rolling on one skate around half the football field (paved track).

Photos from the Wednesday Night Skate on the American Tobacco Trail August 10 2011

We had a great time with Jay up from Atlanta. With Skatey-Mark leading out then serving as sweep alternately, I think in all we had seven, including GotSkates Tom. I don't think I can call all the names, sadly, so I'd better stop there. But two others I know I have skated the trail with before, and one of the guys besides Mark had done the Carolina Century before as well. It was a fun bunch and I enjoyed not being in charge or on home turf but being a visitor.

We saw lots of cyclists including roadies and kids, and lots of families out using the trail. But it always felt good, never negative, to me. I guess I was in the middle most of the time, sometimes going up to the front and others going all the way back. It was a great time.

Skating the Full Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga Trail Again: 94 Miles of Hot Fun in Georgia and Alabama

Driving down from North Carolina late at night, I asked eebee to post a note to the APRR (Atlanta Peachtree Road Rollers) list inviting people to join us for a long slow distance skate the next day, or perhaps the day after. We had earlier this year done our favorite 62-miler from Mile 0 near Nickajack Elementary School to mile 31 at Brushy Mountain Tunnel and back.

Photos and Maps from 95-Mile Inline Skate on Silver Comet Trail and Chief Ladiga Trail: Smyrna, GA to Anniston, Alabama

I've just finished and uploaded 835 or so photos of our 95-mile excursion from July 4, 2009. The vast majority of the route was railtrail, with some exceptions we noted elsewhere on the site. Perhaps more comments on the photos later. For now, here's the link... http://roadskater.net/photos/silver-comet-chief-ladiga-trail-inline-skat... The 3D thumbnail map lets you see smaller versions of the photos where they were taken on a Google Earth map (requires Google Earth from earth.google.com)...

A Quick Warning and Alternate Routes for the Silver Comet Trail Section Between Cedartown GA and Rockmart GA

Three of us did the full skate from mile 0 of Silver Comet outside Atlanta, GA to the end of Chief Ladiga Trail just inside Anniston, AL yesterday. My GPS's said it was 94.92 miles including a few side trips and fun backtracks. Thanks to Tom B for joining us and especially his wife and kids for driving out to retrieve us. Also thanks to Jonathan K for a nice offer of retrieval as well.

Inline Skating 67 Miles on the Chief Ladiga Trail in Alabama: Photos and Maps

We had a fine day out, eebee and myself, from mighty hot to excitingly electric weather. Lots to tell but who knows if I'll find the time. Meanwhile here are 410 photos that are geolocated on a Google Earth KMZ file.

We got started around midday when it was getting hot indeed. We drove to Piedmont, AL, where there's a Welcome Center. We planned to skate the 40 miles down and back to the Anniston, AL end, eat some sandwiches and have cool drinks at the car, then do the 27 miles or so out and back to the trailhead of the Silver Comet at the state line with GA.

Roadskater.net Cloverleaf Inline Skating and Bike Route from Bur-Mil Pool Aquatic Center Greensboro NC

I agree with timv that Bur-Mil pool is a good spot to park. There's a small restroom over by the picnic area that is often open, and a water fountain, I think, all accessible by skates/bikes. We do a route I call the cloverleaf. Here's how that goes... R on Bur-Mil Club rd out of parking lot L onto Owl's Roost Rd X (cross) over Bicentennial Tr (caution) S on Owl's Roost into newish houses C (circle back) cul du sac and return optional slightly downhill cul... L on Owl's Roost Ct C cirle back after cul du sac L on Owl's Roost Rd to continue... or continue...

Inline Skating 44 Miles on the Silver Comet Trail (Slowly). How About Your Recent Workouts?

No matter how far or not, how fast or not, I love to hear people's stories of skating. Ten words or a hundred paragraphs, tell us what you've been skating, cycling, lifting, or anything. Or just tell me what's up lately. So here's my freewriting exercise. I'll try to type it out once and not do editing other than spelling and such... Well, eebee and I went out for a long skate today, thinking we would do about 30 or 32 miles. She's been training to skate and I've been training to type, read, watch p2p tv of sporting events, so you can imagine who had the lower heart rate, ha!
