30-Day Challenge: Asthma, Allergies and Kick-Starting Fitness 2013

Let's see, where was I? Oh yeah. I was slowly making zig-zagging headway with various elimination diets regarding my various allergies and autoimmune issues. Also, there was some recent talk behind the scenes about skaters and their training and/or weight loss goals for the upcoming training season. All of the above, plus a couple of 20 minute flat skating sessions this week that left me gasping for oxygen, has prompted me to try my own 30 Day healthy eating Challenge. I'm hoping to make it past day 4 this time.

A Moment of Silence for Mr. Gatorade

Gatorade inventor, Robert Cade died today, aged 80. Here's a yahoo news report. In the obit, Cade is quoted as saying that when he first drank (an early version of?) Gatorade, he threw up. It also says that the company that took over the licensing rights, Stokely - Van Camp, hated the name Gatorade, but found out that the name was a hit with the general public, so they left it.

All I can say is thank you for helping me stay out of the emergency room on many a 90 degree F day, Mr. Cade!

High Carb (Carbohydrate), Low Fat Grocery Food with Sodium, Potassium Nutrition Facts

Especially in long events over four hours, getting sodium and potassium (and other electrolytes if possible) are important, and more water is not better if it doesn't contain electrolytes. Some say "peanut butter" but during an event it's hard to deal with the fat that comes with it. Those who sweat alot and who experience muscle craps are often looking for sources of potassium. So I've been looking out for convenient sources of sodium and potassium, especially as might be found in grocery or convenience stores.

High Protein, Low Fat, Low Carb (Carbohydrate) Grocery Food Nutrition Facts

I wanted to share some of my findings in my search for relatively easy to find, affordable, options for high protein, low carbohydrate, low fat food. I typically go for high carb, low fat food before and during exercise, and try to eat more protein after. I love pizza and mexican-american food, so take that with a huge shaker of salt. Nevertheless, here are some of my favorites that help me get more protein and a little less fat, and also don't require refrigeration before opening:

A Liberating Nutritional Program for Athletes (Diet Exercise Weight Loss)

I hesitate to use the four-letter word 'diet' here, as that connotates restriction, sacrifice and misery. I also hesitate to call myself an athlete! However, in this bodyweight equation and given the unusually high number of skate-training hours, let the athlete = EB.

Three Hours of Sleep, Some Junior Hamburgers, Yahoo! Mail Crash, Let's Go Skate!

What a crazy day. After a meeting in the early morning, I came back to check on an order I was trying to fill for a company who needed several dozen Robin Safety Boy Emergency Scissors. Changes in shipping, locations, quantities and availability had me trying to juggle a combination of calls and emails.

Nutrition

During my (running) marathon training I have become quite interested in nutrition. I am talking about general nutrition more than what to eat during extended periods of exercise – that is getting enough calories into me to sustain the long runs and fuel the adequate muscle recoveries (before doing it all over again!) without eating high fat or inadvertently putting on a whole bunch of weight.

Hyponatremia Rears its Ugly Head in Global News

If you haven't heard already, 28 year old Mother of 3, Jennifer Lea Strange, died of hyponatremia earlier this week a few hours after drinking nearly two gallons of water, in an attempt to win a Wii for her children. This was part of a morning radio show competition in Sacramento. Words fail me in describing this tragedy. The lengths radio shows will go to for ratings. 10 employees, including the radio show hosts, have been fired as a result.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and Marathon Training

This post is partly for people out there on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) who want to find out more about getting sufficient and efficient carbs for marathon, or extremely long-distance training and events. This means no sugar, wheat, gluten, grains, corn, or potatoes. I put "marathon" in the title for the benefit of any SCD runners who might stumble across this. Obviously what I'm gearing up for, the 87 mile Athens to Atlanta Roadskate, is three and one third times marathon distance. A Google search didn't turn up anything useful for marathon training and SCD. So I thought I'd put my experience out there for anybody else searching.
