Roadskater.net Photos Revolved: Faster, Better, Fetching Views of the People, Days and Places That Brightened My Life

A few years ago I had to shake things up as the old joys were no more....at least for a while. Thanks to three lovely young skater friendgirls, I started skating, and it turned out I was quickly more addicted than they were.  The Year of Skating Dangerously saved my joy. To honor that time, I present: http://roadskater.net/rsn/photos/index.htm .

I was looking to create something other than what I had tried before, which had all dried up. So I bought a cheap digital camera and decided I would take photos and edit them and post them mostly without comment (hard for me!). The collection grew to 31,000 photos! Before September 11, airline flights were cheaper than the gasoline to drive some places. I had free places to land on floors. I went. I took photos. I edited them.

Carolina Century 102-Mile and Athens to Atlanta 87-Mile Route Elevation Profile Comparison

Lots of skaters have asked how the Carolina Century compares with Athens to Atlanta in terms of distance and elevation. It's hard to say but my impression has been that:

Athens to Atlanta A2A Roadskate 2008 to 2009 Detour Elevation Profile, Distance, Route Changes

Here are two graphics I made to compare the 2008 route and the 2009 route for the Athens to Atlanta (A2A) Roadskate, for anyone who is curious. I imagine a very few people will be intensely curious. The first graphic shows the changes in elevation profile and distance for 2008 and the 2009 detour. It takes a little over 5 seconds to switch from 2008 to 2009 and then it should repeat to infinity and beyond.

Measuring jerseys

Related to current jersey issues, I got some jerseys from the closet and found a tape measure and checked some dimensions. It's a bit iffy measuring the Roadskater jerseys because of the double seams on each size (but that's part of what makes them supersweet, right?) but I did my best. Blake thought this information might perhaps be useful to someone some day.

Green 2006 jersey size XL: about 24" across chest just below sleeves

Iris/violet 2007 jersey size XL: about 24"

Orange 2008 jersey size XL: almost 25"

Watch Hours of Free Internet TV Speed Skating (Long Track and Short) On Demand and Live with Highlights and Recaps

Oh I am so sorry I didn't look this up before, even when I saw press releases earlier this year. I just never quite got to it until now. But now is good too. If you wish you could see long track and short track ISU world cup events on your television, well you might sometimes, but on your computer, you can see many hours of video from this year's world cup season in both track formats. I've only watched a bit but it looks and sounds and feels great!

Bob Bobarazzi Ryan (Thirstydog) Pastel of 2008 Athens to Atlanta (A2A) based on Roadskater.net Photo

I finally got around to asking the thirstydog himself, Bob "Bobarazzi" Ryan if I could upload his pastel of one of my photos (see the bottom of the article for the pastel). He explained that it is one of his favorite spots but not one where he usually has his camera out (I agree and until this year with a smaller camera, I think it was the same for me). Bob said...

Oscars for 2008 (81st) Nominations, Awards and Contest to Prove How We Are NOT the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Having missed my old workmate and friend, Tom's, Oscar Contest, but being movie mavens at least for a few weeks of the year, eebee and I devised our own scoring system and made up a liitle contest for ourselves. We had a private viewing and voting for the Oscars, and of course, made a public spreadsheet.Herein lies the story of the nominations, awards, our predictions and wishes, and the insignificant result. We would have failed, but we're OK with that.

British Cycling Team GB (Winners of Eight Gold Medals in 2008 Olympics) Shreds the Skinsuits

Here's a quick one about the British Cycling organisation as they'd spell't getting their skinsuits back so they could be destroyed, thus holding the advantage, they hope, for the 2012 olys. An odd little article that mentions thoughts of breaking collar bones too, all in the name of safety? By the way I'm not sure of the medals counts, but the beeb said 8 so maybe there was an update after the olys. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/other_sports/cycling/7872309.stm Some background on the impressive results by Great Britain:

Roadskubuntu 64 Out for a Spin on the Slow, Crowded Internet Onramp with a $215 AMD 64 X2 Vista 32 Ubuntu 64 Box

Well after many months of running on empty on an overused underpowered system, Roadskater.net is rolling on the same slow road to the internet highway but with a faster machine...a dual-core amd cpu (not blazing, just 2.2 GHz or so), lots of hard drive space, and 3 gig of DDR-2 800 RAM (waiting to go to 8G soon). I'm not sure if this kit is a bit overclocked but my memtest reports moving faster than claimed. Anyway this whole kit (3G RAM version) ended up at $215 pre-tax as a demo sale so cross thy fingerettes me skateys.

Holiday Shopping Deals That Help Roadskater.net Too: Forerunner 305 for just $150, Much More

Some have asked if there's a way to help Roadskater.net other than donating money, and here is one that won't cost anything. In general, if you plan to buy anything on ebay.com or amazon.com, if you can visit roadskater.net and do the first search from the sidebar ebay and amazon search boxes, that helps (especially if you end up joining ebay and buying or selling something not long afterward).
