Roadskater.net Photos Revolved: Faster, Better, Fetching Views of the People, Days and Places That Brightened My Life

A few years ago I had to shake things up as the old joys were no more....at least for a while. Thanks to three lovely young skater friendgirls, I started skating, and it turned out I was quickly more addicted than they were.  The Year of Skating Dangerously saved my joy. To honor that time, I present: http://roadskater.net/rsn/photos/index.htm .

I was looking to create something other than what I had tried before, which had all dried up. So I bought a cheap digital camera and decided I would take photos and edit them and post them mostly without comment (hard for me!). The collection grew to 31,000 photos! Before September 11, airline flights were cheaper than the gasoline to drive some places. I had free places to land on floors. I went. I took photos. I edited them.

Thus began the original and still surviving Roadskater.net charity inline skating and cycling photo site (which has links to lots of extra stuff like movies, maps, data):

By 2009, a lot more people had expensive digital cameras, so my photos were less important to Tour to Tanglewood and to others. I grew a bit weary of the whole cycle of deleting, editing, geolocating, renaming, building pages, &c., then feeling I had nothing left to write about the event, if I were going to do that on email lists or on the new Roadskater.net. But I also got involved in Roadskater.net jerseys, Tour to Tanglewood teams, presenting Carolina Century, and more. Also, the static html pages were slow to load in the old format, and even more importantly, the FELT slow, because it wasn't loading the next photo while you were looking at the current one.

After this year's 102 miles at Carolina Century, I knew I wanted a new way to show the day's pics. With eebee off traveling the United Kingdom, it was a good time to dig into something time intensive, so I went for it. I did an extensive search for how it's being done now, looking for something fast, preloading, self-building (at least to some extent), with a good feel. It came down to choosing the setup that lured me into looking at the most photos most easily in the demos. So I got Photofloat going on Ubuntu Server, installed the Java Development Kit and Python, mildly hacked some of the code, and ran make (there are still some things I want to change to make it work how I want).

Then I dumped my 31,000 photos in a new directory and went about creating or reworking EXIF dates (even with wrong but sequential times for sort order), renaming most file names based on those dates, updating photo album titles, and more. This took, LIKE, FOREVER! But what fun looking at so many photos of great times!

As noted, the legacy site is still up (see a view of it below, but visit the url above for best results). I doubt I'll be updating it after an edit to clear out broken and outdated references. Whew!

Finally, I am ready to go forward with the new old RSN photos, maybe with some 2013 photos, and maybe even backward to old unpublished photos....thousands of them!
