Tirreno-Adriatico Pro Cycling Stage Race Final Stages Good Stuff!

roadskater's picture

This is converted from some earlier comments started here (Shani Davis Wins Silver and Gold in Speed Skating World Championships; Tyler Farrar leads Tirreno-Adriatico Cycling Stage Race). Now I'm remembering how much I like this one. The Tour de France is huge and flashy and comfy in ways, with better roads and more everything. This is a great alternative to Tour de France, and it appears some teams are splitting their efforts or choosing between Tirreno-Adriatico and Paris-Nice (another fun one to follow).

First, if you're going to just watch a few minutes, here's the finish of Stage 5, the last 7.7km, which are great fun to watch, with a breakaway, small chase breakaway, some major riders dropped, and some major riders in a chasing peleton. Check it out...

I watched a reply of the last 20km of Stage 5 and now they're on to Stage 6 Live on  E u r o s p o r t U K as delivered by this site...

OK. That was a great stage (6), and here's the end of it...tons of fun!

Check these sites when USA coverage lets you down:

Cadel Evans is in yellow by a couple of seconds and many think he has a chance (they always do!). Today's stage 6 was downhill at first with one climb then a lot of chop but some laps at the finish with some short sharp climbs, including a short steep finish as I recall.

Tirreno-Adriatico route map 2011

I was curious about the towns they cycle through in this race. Here's the 2011 route.

Final Stage 7 Video Tirreno-Adriatico Pro Bike Race

Here's the video for Stage 7. Not so exciting, at least to me, as individual time trials tend to be unless I have a lot of data and knowledge of the course. Still, here are the last few riders...

Spoiler alert for what follows...

Well, finally Cadel Evans gets the win so many have so long wished for. I know he's had other wins like being champion in mountain biking world cup in 1998 and 1999, plus second place in the Tour de France in 2007 and 2008. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadel_Evans. It seems a bit strange to say it, but this is the strongest I have seen him. I've always looked at his performance and wondered when he was going to kick in with the power everyone spoke of, but in the finish of Stage 6 of the T-A this year, wow, it was there. He looked dropped, then as the leaders looked at each other he caught up, then he finished from the front and still won going away. George Hincappe had helped but that was 2.4 km before! Evans rode in with no team lead-in for the sprint and dominated the skinny boys with power. I do think he's skinnied up a bit himself, and think he made some comments about that too. So great job Cadel, and it's great to see someone so well liked do so well! Oh yes...Fabian Cancellara took the individual time trial honors.

In Universal Sports style, here's the spoiler-titled video I might have linked had it been spoiler-free...but with English commentary and brief...

Also for Stage 6...

And Stage 5...

I'll leave it at that because it's easy to find the rest.
